Highlife: Tribute to the Sun

06/06/11

Following the success of our last party at La Cheetah with Esa and the amazing ultraviolet club design, and our first birthday party with Shackleton, Highlife returns to La Cheetah to play tribute to the Sun. We all know sunshine is one of the things Glasgow lacks, so this party is designed to play tribute to the little we do get and in order to help coax out more during the summer months.

To help us, we’re jetting in a guest DJ… who comes from sunnier climes in Chile and is descendant to the most ancient of sun worshipers, the Incas. We’re not gonna reveal who he is until on the night but we can assure you he’s set to follow in the footsteps of fellow countrymen Ricardo Villalobos and Matias Aguayo when his tunes get released later on this year. Expect South American rhythms mixed with jackin’ Chicago and UK house beats.

Support comes from Brian d’Souza aka Auntie Flo who’s own releases have been making waves across the scene in recent months. His first release Goan Highlife received plays from Villalobos, Andrew Weatherall and Caribou and his follow up Oh My Days (due out later this month) has been rinsed by Joy Orbison, Jackmaster and Pearson Sound, the later of whom liked it so much he has remixed it.

I’m not sure we can top the visual design of our last party but we are certainly going to try! Professional film set designer Aoife McKim will be creating a visual feast.

We guarantee you sunshine >>>>Make sure you bring your sunglasses!

Shackleton helps us celebrate Highlife 1st Birthday

19/05/11

Highlife is 1!

Over the past year, we’ve repeatedly explored new musical genres and cultures from around the globe including a UK debut for Mexican Rebolledo (Comeme), Mim Suleiman from Tanzania, UK Funky from T. Williams, jackin’ house from Capracara (DFA / Soul Jazz), showcasing exclusive live afro-futurism from local boy Bamboo Palace (LuckyMe) and South African house from Esa (Sub Club).

Now, to celebrate our first birthday, w…e’re proud to present SHACKLETON for an extremely rare live performance. One of the biggest names in electronic music, Shackleton is currently on the top of his game. The last couple of years has seen him releasing one of the best received Fabric mixes of recent times and starting his own label Woe to the Septic Heart from the ashes of the Skull Disco label where he made his name.

Shackleton’s peerless live sets consists of complex, tribal rhythms and hypnotic basslines: a sound that fits perfectly at Highlife. Recently restricting himself to playing the biggest festivals such as Bloc, Sonar, Unsound etc, this intimate early show is one not to miss!

AFROFUTURES PODCAST: 005

19/05/11

Shackleton Voodoo Drums

The world is getting smaller: music is changing. Afrofutures will explore emergent music from around the globe focusing on small localised musical ghettos, cross-cultural collaborations and the so-called World Music 2.0. Afrofutures is hosted by Glasgow based DJ Brian d’Souza.

Episode 5 comes in the form of a highly inventive vinyl-only mix by Brian d’Souza, fusing original Voodoo Drumming recordings from Haitian ritual ceremonies with the tribal computer music of Shackleton. Shackleton is due to play live at Highlife’s 1st birthday celebration this week in Glasgow so this mix pays tribute to his unique drum –led sound in direct comparison to the even more complex rhythm patterns of the Haitian Drummers.

Auntie Flo's Top Ten Kwaito Videos

04/05/11

So it all started with Dj Mujava’s ‘Township Funk’ a few years ago which was released on Warp. The tune that introduced me to the sound of kwaito..

That was followed up when Gerv from the London dubstep outfit LV took a trip to his home town in SA and recorded the tune ‘Boomslang’ with MC Okmalumkoolkat and released on Hyperdub in 2010.

Dj Mujava has not been prolific (perhaps due to illness?) and has only managed one further release to follow up Township Funk. It’s an absolute banger though!

I guess this sparked an interest to see what else was hot in South Africa and I quickly found Casablanca by MZO. Big bassline, perfect for the dancefloor.

The Blackdown blog has an in depth interview with Gerv from LV about his travels in South Africa. He highlighted this gutter-kwaito track as being one of his favourites. Quality video too.

The next two videos are two of my personal favourites. I found them after hours of trawling through the AfrodesiaMP3 site which ha a load of South African music, some good, a lot rubbish. Both tracks show the deeper, groove based side to the sound – hypnotic, tribal and addictive.

This track was introduced to me by Joel Shaw of Slabs of the Tabernacle when he played at our Highlife party back in March. A random find on white label, it’s a stunningly beautiful track.

DJ Sdunkero is behind some of my favourite kwaito tracks and I’m honoured to be sharing my next single release with his ‘Choosing Love’ (out in June on H+P Records). It’s been getting a great reaction on western dancefloors when I’ve played it.

Out Here records from Berlin are behind the Ayobaness compilation from last year which also turned my head the SA house sound. This is a great video of them performing live in Berlin, Vuvuzela’s and all. Even the fat guy at the front is jumping!
